The Weekly Draw for July 28th thru Aug 3rd
Energy and guidance for the week ahead
Hello, sweet writers. Welcome to this week’s edition of The Weekly Draw. When I sat down to pull cards for you, I had planned to draw three cards for mind, body and spirit. However, when shuffling the cards, I felt a pull to draw cards — both tarot and oracle — for the energy of the week, a potential obstacle and a possible highlight. Let’s look the spread.
Energy of the week: Intelligence
What a lovely energy to be in throughout the week, don’t you think? Crows are highly intelligent birds. This week is a prime time for deep introspection and utilizing your mental prowess. As a writer, your mind is your most potent tool. So dig into your subconscious to mine the depths of your imagination for inspiration and solutions. It reminds me of the Moon card in the major arcana. Don’t be afraid to go into the dark. There’s good stuff hiding in there if you’re brave enough to seek it out and shed light on it.
A potential obstacle: 10 of pentacles
Interesting card for a potential obstacle. The 10 of pentacles represents financial security, family and tradition. In the context of writing, it suggests a feeling of being trapped in a familiar pattern, or perhaps a fear of financial instability if you’re pursuing a writing career. It’s also pointing to a resistance to change or taking risks, which, as we know, can be a common hurdle for creatives.
A possible highlight: King of pentacles
Long live the king. Upon seeing this card, I felt a powerful counterbalance to the 10. It signifies maturity, responsibility, legacy and material success. In this context, it represents finding a balance between the creative and practical aspects of your work. Because it’s the king, it indicates the potential for financial reward or recognition for your writing. It also suggests the development of a strong and authoritative voice in your work.
Thoughts of a Book Druid…
Looking at the cards altogether — notice how the bunnies in the 10 of pentacles and the crow are all looking at the king of pentacles — I see a week of internal exploration and potential breakthrough. You have the mental capacity to overcome any obstacles, but you might face some resistance to change or fear of financial insecurity. However, there's a strong potential for reward and recognition, and that perseverance and a mature approach to your craft will pay off.
A few potential story ideas to play with based on the cards:
A character who is a brilliant mind but struggles with financial stability or family obligations.
A hero or villain who must overcome a deep-seated fear to achieve their creative goals.
A story about a mentor figure (the king of pentacles) guiding a younger, more impulsive character.
Playing with words…
Both the 10 and king of pentacles have been coming up quite a bit over the last week or so. The king has inspired me to play with words and write a short story from the third story idea. I’ll share the outline I whipped up on an index card, then post the short story on Thursday.
Note: I’m so serious… I wrote the outline on an index card but chose not to take a pic because of how messy it is. And the mentor figure… the king of pentacles?? That would be me, The Book Druid.
Prompt: An emergent writer is struggling with writer's block. A seasoned, successful author and writing mentor (the king of pentacles) offers guidance.
(Very) Rough outline:
Character intro: A young, aspiring writer is facing a blank page. They're feeling overwhelmed and insecure about their abilities.
Mentor appearance: The experienced author, a wise and respected figure in the literary world, appears unexpectedly… like magic. Perhaps they're a neighbor, a family friend or even a druidic priestess from fairyland who reads tarot.
Guidance and wisdom: The mentor offers words of encouragement and practical advice. They might share a personal anecdote about overcoming writer's block or explain the importance of discipline and perseverance.
Resolution: The young writer, inspired by the mentor's wisdom, finds a renewed sense of purpose and begins to write again.
That’s all for this week. Happy writing and stay tuned for Thursday’s short story.
Yours in magic and mysticism,
The Book Druid
